7 ENERGY-BOOSTING TIPS TO AVOID THE AFTERNOON SNOOZE
Boost your energy at work and slay the day with ease!
It’s like clockwork. Every day at 2:00, you can feel your mind wandering, and you pray to the Time Gods to make this workday end already. Well, here is some good news. While there’s no way to time travel (yet!), these 7 energy-boosting tips to get you through your workday are an answer to your prayers. (Sort of!)
1. Energy-boosting tips, part one: Stay hydrated
We’re not just talking water. Other fluids can keep your tanks topped up, plus give you something extra.
First, if you rely on a morning cup of Joe, then you'll be happy to learn that this is an excellent way to start your day! A cup (or three) of coffee in the morning not only wakes you up, but that shot of caffeine stays with you most of the day, helping you stay productive. And, contrary to myth, coffee does hydrate the body.
Now that you’ve made it through your morning, some other ways to stay healthily hydrated are water (of course) and green tea!
Being even mildly dehydrated has been shown to affect mood and energy levels negatively, so it's recommended to drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water (or the equivalent) a day. This seems like a lot, but there are tricks to get you to that number (setting timers, adding fruit to your water, different water bottles, etc.).
If you don’t want to survive on coffee and water alone, try sipping on green tea! Green tea has some caffeine (not as much as coffee), and it's also rich with antioxidants, amino acids, and even some vitamins. These compounds have many potential health benefits, including raising your metabolic rate and improving brain function!
2. Get outside
Going for a quick walk is a scenic and healthy way to gain a natural boost. Walking produces several different hormones that make you feel good and bump up your energy. So, if you can get outside for a 15-minute jaunt in the afternoon, you definitely should!
If you don’t have anywhere to go for a long walk, that’s okay too. Even just getting outside will help. Studies have shown that being out in nature for just 20 minutes a day significantly lowers stress levels and improves mood. So, try taking your lunch to-go and sitting outside to eat.
3. Energy-boosting tips can be tasty: eat less lunch and better snacks
Speaking of lunch … if you want to bypass the afternoon sleepies, you really shouldn’t supersize your midday repast. When you eat a big meal, your digestive system has to work overtime to break down all that food, which is one reason you don't have the energy to do much else.
The best way to use food for energy is to try to keep your blood sugar levels even throughout the day. This may call for snacks! Some great energy-boosting snacks include trail mix, apples or bananas with peanut butter, popcorn, smoothies, hard-boiled eggs, almonds, veggies with hummus, and berries.
4. Chew gum
After a tasty lunch, kill two birds with one stone by chewing gum. We could all probably use a midday breath refresher, and one study showed that chewing gum could perk you up as well.
Not only has chewing gum been shown to give you a nice jolt, but it's also been found to improve memory and concentration! Who knew?
5. Listen to music
Most people enjoy listening to music, but did you know it may scientifically make you happier? We can get behind energy-boosting tips that do that.
When you listen to music that you like, your brain releases dopamine, which makes you happy and can affect motivation. It’s a handy hormone when you feel like the day will never end.
But if you listen to music you hate, it can actually increase stress hormones and make you feel worse. So, be kind to your office neighbors if trash metal is your jam—headphones are the polite way to rock out.
6. Look away from your screen
Playing “Look Away” with your computer should be done throughout the day. Concentrating on a computer screen for hours at a time will wear out the eyes.
Ophthalmologists recommend staring at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes (20x20x20). Looking at something at a distance will relax the eye muscles more than staring at something right next to the screen.
If you remember to do this throughout the day, your eyes will thank you. And they won’t be wimping out before the day is done.
7. CBD Gummies
Okay, the last of these energy-boosting tips isn't going to jack you up like caffeine. But lots of people use it to calm excessive worry, take the edge off, and achieve focus during those late-afternoon doldrums.
Any quality CBD product may help you focus on what matters, but CBD gummies are a fun way to get your dose along with a little something extra. They are infused with vitamins B12 and D3—both of which our bodies need for energy!
Try popping some afternoon gummies, listening to some tunes, and hitting the green tea. You just might feel relaxed, focused, and able to power through to the afternoon whistle.
